勉強メモを整理していたら次のようなツイート（の文章だけ）が保存されていたので記事にしてまとめておきます。

おそらく自分の反応らしきものがこちら。
He heard a big rolling sound in the distance as of thunder. のようにも出来たりする (RTの文は baying—hound が密接だけど)
元のツイートで触れられている現代英文法講義の記述は 615, 616 ページにあります。
次のような as は, OED2 (s.v. As 10a) によれば, ‘With the subordinate clause abbreviated: In the same way as, as if, as it were)*1という意味の接続詞である (Web3 s.v. As 4 も. as = as if としている).
(10a) の例で言えば, There was a ring as (if it were) of steel in his voice. とパラフレーズすることができる. しかし, 従位節の省略を補うとかなり不自然な英文になることもあるので, むしろ, 「類似性」(similarity) を表すために, 不変化詞 (particle) の as が前置詞句の前に挿入されている, と考えるほうが現実的であろう.
◇as+of 句の例:

◇as+他の前置詞句の例:

as of は「…の時点で, …現在で（の）」という意味を持っているので誤認しやすいわけですが, どう考えてもそれでは解釈不能なことに気づけるかがポイントです.
*1:おそらく誤植で, ) ではなく ’ のはずです.
