現存する和訳の一覧は次の通りです。

EGA I, II, III には中国語訳が存在しており（ISBN: 9787040506549, 9787040526141, 9787040552089）、かなり大々的な計画であることが訳者前書きにある以下の記述から窺うことができます。

巴黎南大学的 Luc Illusie 教授和 J.-M. Fontaine 教授十分关心此译本的出版工作，并为此做了许多工作．Illusie 教授热心于中法数学交流，培养了许多中国学生，也给予译者很多指导，他还专门与法文版权所有者 Johanna Grothendieck 女士及法国高等科学研究所 (IHES) 进行联络，为中文版获得授权创造了良好的条件，并为此版写了序言．诚挚感谢 Illusie 教授为此付出的热情和心力．东京大学的加藤和也教授和巴黎南大学的 Michel Raynaud 教授也给予译者很大鼓励，在此一并致谢．

著作権上の問題

Grothendieck の Tohoku と EGA は出版年が 1970 年以前であり、SGA も底本は 1970 年以前に出版されたものではあるので、10 年留保によって自由に翻訳することができます。それに加え、次の記述を参照すると Springer 版も著作権が切れていると見做してよいのであろうことがわかります。

When I asked Dr. Catriona M. Byrne (Senior Editor Mathematics at Spinger-Verlag) about this, she told me:

The various volumes of the “Seminaire de Geometrie Algebrique” of Alexandre Grothendieck, published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Mathematics more than 20 years ago are sold out and no longer available. We were not able to reprint the volumes, because Professor Grothendieck withheld his permission.

Given the time that has elapsed, the copyright for the content of the volumes has reverted to the authors and volume editors involved. Thus, for any projects that you might initiate to make this material available again, you will need to obtain the permission of each author concerned. Springer requests only that you indicate in full the source of the original publication.

Hence, if the authors are not opposed, the project can go ahead. It seems to be impossible to reach the main author, Grothendieck himself, but I (Bas Edixhoven; I do take responsibility for this statement) do not expect him to be against this project.

この後に Grothendieck は 2010 年に「個人的なお願い」として再出版を止めるよう手紙を書きました。

しかし、実際には arXiv にも次のような翻刻版がほとんど著作権が放棄された上で公開されています。

というわけで、私もインターネットの深海から 50 年にわたって幻となっていた EGA の Springer 版を探し当て、Wiliam Stein 氏のサイトで公開していただいております。

この点について Tohoku を英訳した Michael Barr 氏は次のようにコメントしており、私も完全に同意せざるをえません。

[...] We do not have Grothendieck’s permission to publish this. His literary executor, Jean Malgoire refused to even ask him. What we have heard is that Grothendieck “Does not believe in” copyright and will have nothing to do with it, even to release it. So be it. We post this at our peril and you download it, if you do, at yours. It seems clear that Grothendieck will not object, while he is alive, but he has children who might take a different view of the matter. [...]

UPDATE, MARCH, 2010. Since the above was written in Dec. 2008, there has been a new development. Grothendieck has asked that all republication of any of his works (in original or translation) be ended. He has not actually invoked copyright (which, as stated above, he does not believe in), but asked this as some sort of personal privilege. This makes no sense and Grothendieck never expressed such a wish before. I personally believe that Grothendieck’s work, as indeed all mathematics including my own modest contributions, are the property of the human race and not any one person. I do accept copyright but only for a very limited time. Originally in the US, copyright was for seven years, renewable for a second seven. These periods were doubled and then doubled again and the copyright has now been extended essentially indefinitely, without the necessity of the author’s even asking for a copyright or extension. This is a perversion of the original purpose of copyright, which was not to make intellectual achievements a property, but rather to encourage the publication, eventually into the public domain, of creative efforts.

In any case, you should know that if you copy, or even read, this posting you are violating Grothendieck’s stated wishes, for what that is worth.

2021 年 8 月現在、日本語で読めるスキーム論に基づいた代数幾何学の文献で、入手しやすいものはハーツホーンと上野とマンフォードだけである。まずハーツホーンは三分冊になっており非常に携帯性が悪く、しかも第一巻はオンデマンド印刷になってしまったので書店にちゃんとセットで並んでいることは珍しくなってしまい、4180 + 2640 + 3520 = 10340 円と非常に高価である。上野は当初三分冊で刊行された後に単行本となったが、しばらくして絶版になってしまった。マンフォードは 2017 年に出版され、今のところは流通も問題なく 6050 円で購入できる。一方で Grothendieck の EGA は（彼の遺志に反して！）インターネットで無料で読むことができる。他にも Stacks Project などが無料で読めるが、これは本当に百科事典的であるのに対し、EGA はちゃんと読むことができる本である。

I know it's a scary 1800 pages of French, but

  1. It's really easy French. I would describe myself as not knowing any French, but I can read EGA without too much trouble.
  2. It's extremely clear. The proofs are usually very short because the results are very well organized.
  3. It's the canonical reference for algebraic geometry.
I assure you it is not 1800 pages of fluff. I've found it quite rewarding to familiarize myself with the contents of EGA. Many algebraic geometry students are able to say with confidence "that's one of the exercises in Hartshorne, chapter II, section 4." It's even more empowering to have that kind of command over a text like EGA, which covers much more material with fewer unnecessary hypotheses and with greater clarity.

自信のある人は悪いこと言わないのでとりあえずGrothendieckというかEGAとかSGA, 柏原-Schapira, Gaitsgory, Lurie, Costello, Scholtz, 深谷賢治のように長くて深い重要な本を書く人たちの著作を追ってください。一部分でもちゃんと理解できれば研究上で大きな力となるはずです。

一つの例を挙げよう．自分はSGA4を読んだとき，強い衝撃を感じたのを覚えている．というのも，まずそれ以前に自分はSGA4は「はじめてtopos理論が導入され，それらを用いてエタールコホモロジー理論を展開したもの」という話を聞いていただけった．それだけに「そこで展開されるtopos理論はまだまだ原石で，粗削りなものだろう」という印象を勝手に抱いていた．
それが蓋を開けてみると，その完成度はすさまじいものであった．のちにLawvereやJohnstoneなどによって展開されるElementary toposや圏論的論理学との関係に関していえば”Sheaves in Geomery and Logic”や”Topos theory”の方が優れているといえるが，純粋にコホモロジー論などの数論幾何への準備としてのtopos理論は未だにSGA4が最高の本であると思う．

紙面の都合を考えれば当然 EGA や SGA の翻訳など無理筋に決まっているのだが、2018 年に Stacks Project のフレームワーク Gerby を使って EGA を英訳するプロジェクトが始まった。現在かなりの部分が快適に英語で読めるようになっており、このようなサイトが日本語で読めるようになれば代数幾何学の学びやすさは格段に向上することが間違いないだろう。
