Not the least of the Zoological Gardens' many attractions is their inexhaustibility. There is always something new, and—what is not less satisfactory—there is always something old that you had previously missed. How is that? How is it that one may go to the Zoo a thousand times and consistently overlook one of the most ingratiating denizens, and then on the thousand-and-first visit come upon this creature as though he was the latest arrival? これは東大の過去問なのですが、原 (1999) では “There the quaint little absurdity was, all that long while, as ready to be seen as to-day, but you never saw him, or at any rate, you never noticed him.” の部分を次のように解説しています。
いちばんの難所は the quaint little absurdity であろう。この absurdity も定冠詞や形容詞のついた普通名詞である。それがわかれば「こっけいな動物」の意味であることが察知できるはずである。前の文に creature とあり、あとで him と受けているところからも、それを推察することができなければならない。この作家は、まず、attractions という語を用い、その次に something new, something old として読者をまどわせ、ついに one of the most ingratiating denizens→this creature→arrival→absurdity→him によって動物園の動物であることを明示している
として「その風変わりな、かわいい、こっけいな動物は......」と訳しているのですが、Lucas がなぜ absurdity で動物を指そうと思ったのか全く分からない上に、文脈からしても些か不自然に思えます。このことについて行方 (2012) は次のように解説しています。
生徒：「奇妙な小さい不合理な動物」というと、見た目が不合理な動物ですか？
先生：ここは大変難しいところだから、私が答えてしまおう。1000回も見逃したのが不合理だというのであって、動物自身に何か不合理があるというのではないのだよ……「……おかしなことに、この変わった小さな奴は、1001回目と同じく、その間中見てもらうのを待ってそこにちゃんといたのに……」
生徒：さっきの箇所は、「おかしなことに」と副詞的に訳したのですね。
先生：名詞ではどうも落ち着かないので、原文に相当する日本語の範囲で工夫してみたのだよ。もちろん「このおかしな変わったチビ君」としたってよいと思う……
完璧に納得できました。うまく言葉にできなませんが、まさにその通りです。メモ。
